Fall Math Assessments

Thanks to Christine for compiling and adapting these FSiM assessments for us to use at the beginning of each school year to observe and record the math understandings for each student in our class.  Each assessment is a 5 to 10 minute conference, as well as some whole class activities for grade 2 and 3 students. Our learners find the activities to be engaging and playful; as they are soft assessments to determine what students know.

Once the assessments are complete, profile sheets allow teachers to see the trends in their classrooms and can then effective instruction can be planned for the whole class, small groups and individual students.

Thinkboards - We have been enjoying adapting masters for Thinkboards in our district.  Many of which are now available at our print shop - when laminated, they are useful for students to practice showing their thinking. Thanks to Campbell River for sharing their thinkboards.

Forms for completing and profiling with the First Steps assessments

The Class Profile prints onto legal size paper.  Typically, I enlarge the class profile to an 11 by 17.  This spring, some schools repeated the assessents and recorded the spring results in a different colour on the same sheet.  This was an easy way to track progress.  We were very happy with the growth noted.

Alternate Activities

Assessment Tasks - dinosaur task - after finding some pretty poor results in the fall, and then working on partitioning and finally some place value, we reassessed with the 'Wheel Task'.  This sheet is a step more difficult than the original dinosaur task but showed us quickly if the children understood that the 4 48, was for 40 wheels and not just 4.

If you come up with any more, send them along.
